Travel and Leisure has just told everyone that the Middle Keys is one of the Best 50 Places to Travel in 2021 and they even mentioned us!  If you get a chance to read the article look for #14.  We’ll leave the light on for you!

Here is what they are saying about the Middle Keys.

“The closest you can get to a Caribbean vacation without leaving the continental U.S., the laid-back islands between Key Largo and Key West took the brunt of Hurricane Irma in 2017 and are where you want to visit in 2021 to connect with one of the country’s most fragile ecosystems, both above and below sea level: astronomer-led stargazing walks at the family-friendly Hawk’s Cay on Duck Key; Grimal Grove, where community organizer-turned-tropical fruit farmer Patrick Garvey is raising five varieties of nutritious breadfruit to fight hunger insecurity; the Turtle Hospital on Marathon, whose recent 911s include caring for babies beached by Hurricane Eta and endangered Kemps-Ridleys cold-stunned (like hypothermia for turtles) in Cape Cod. While unseasonably chilly water spells trouble up north, warming seas and a still-unidentified infection has bleached up to 98 percent of the Keys’ local reef — the largest in North America — but the young scientists at the MOTE Elizabeth Moore marine lab on Summerland Key are in the midst of a promising project to rejuvenate the crippled reef through lab reproduction (like IVF for coral). You can even participate in a hands-on underwater coral transplant through a new partnership with Captain Hook’s dive center on Big Pine. To balance good work with sybaritic indulgence, there’s no beating the scalloped pool and impeccable residences at Marathon’s recently reopened Marlin Bay Resort & Marina. The resort is walking distance to Keys Fisheries, the best place in the islands for stone crab, a sustainable specialty that goes for $3 a claw in season at the pleasingly disheveled upstairs bar.” —Adam Erace

It has been just a short time since Mote Marine Laboratories and Capt. Hook’s has signed a memorandum of understanding in which both organizations have committed themselves to work together on a Coral Revival program.   “We have already conducted a trial course that is designed for the ecology conscious diver that wants to make difference.”   By establishing a program that includes both educational opportunity and practical hands on underwater experiences, we can multiply ourselves by using the divers that really want to make a difference.

The Hook’s dive team, working closely with Mote’s Education and Coral Restoration departments, will teach visiting certified divers how to fragment and plant corals in Mote’s nurseries in the lower Florida Keys. The initial efforts will begin in Mote’s coral nursery located near the Looe Key Marine Sanctuary. Future plans are to expand the program to Key West.  The program begins with a lecture at Mote’s facility located in Summerland Key, Florida. After the morning’s lecture, tour, and hands on practice all divers will depart from Captain Hook’s facility on Big Pine Key to dive and work in Mote’s nursery. There will be a total of four (4) dives over two days. Divers who complete the program will be awarded a NAUI Coral Specialty C-Card. The programs goals are to educate interested eco-tourist divers about our oceans’ coral reefs and to actually work to help regrow corals and rebuild the coral reefs in the lower Florida Keys.

For us at Capt. Hook’s, it is simple, dedicate ourselves to being part of the solution and we can continue to bring the ocean to new divers  everyday. We are trying to do our part as an operator that teaches conservation and careful use techniques every time we teach a new diver or bring divers to the reef through our Blue Star program through NOAA and now through our association with MOTE Marine Laboratories in this new Coral Revival Program, we believe we can make a real difference along with these eco-conscious divers.

Rock It Coaster Design

Our Rock It! Program is coming to all three of our locations in Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West!  You might ask, what the heck is a Rock It! Program?? It is our discount program that comes a little fun.  If you are inclined to look for a decorated rock that we have painted and have hidden inside and outside of our locations, you will get a discount of 10% on your purchase.  We exclude fuel and licenses but you get it on everything else.

If you are a rock painter or decorator, we accept rocks as well to get the discount.  So, you can paint your way to a discount and we then hide your rock for someone else to find and get a discount.  It is a unique way to pass it forward to another fellow fisherman, diver or shopper.

Here are some the many people that have taken advantage of our Rock It! Program already!  We have also had many find a rock each day to get the discount.  One discount per day.  Rock Painters and Discount Shoppers Unite!

Vandenberg:  A Great Wreck & an Even Better Artificial Reef

Yes, it has been 10 years since the sinking of the USNS Vandenberg. I can remember being a part of a small family business dive shop in Marathon, thinking, Oh Boy, there goes our business. Fortunately, there was enough business to go around and the Thunderbolt also represents a great wreck to dive. We are happy to be a part of the the Key West diving community and having a chance to dive the Vandenberg on a regular basis.

We love wrecks because they are fascinating.  They carry so much history and bring that to each shoreline community in which they are located.  We talk about them affectionately like they are a part of us.  We don’t have the Empire State Building, we have the USNS Vandenberg.  That is our signature and it is fitting for us that live by the sea.  But it is even so much more than that.  It is a reef substitute, a secret blessing.  It offers life.  Once the wreck is introduced into the marine environment, it acts as a natural rocky bottom, providing potential living space for a new reef community. Nature quickly takes over and, soon thereafter, the structure begins to lose its artificial character. With each passing day, as numerous new living organisms begin to colonize the structure, what was once “artificial” now becomes a progressively intensifying reef ecosystem. In time, the steel structure will disappear beneath a colorful blanket of undersea life.  We have seen this with the Thunderbolt in Marathon and it is happening everyday on the Vandenberg. It is no longer the death of a ship or the graveyard but the life-giving structure that is sorely needed.  They take the pressure off the reefs to produce so much for us humans. These huge artificial reefs offer so much for both reef fish but also they are large enough to offer a cruising pelagics including gamefish refuge.

If we are lucky we will be adding another ship to Marathon, FL.  In the meantime, we need to celebrate the sinking of one of the greatest artificial reefs the Keys has ever seen.  USNS Vandenberg, we salute you!
